Rooth J. (1955) IJslandse Brilduiker, Bucephala islandica (Gm.), nieuw voor Nederland. ARDEA 43 (1-3): 135-136
The author had the opportunity to observe under favourable circumstances near the Posthuiswad on the island of Vlieland (Waddenzee) Bucephala islandica (Gm.), Barrow's Goldeneye, on February 16th, 1955. It concerns the observation of an adult male. The jl1veniles and adult females are almost similar in clangula and islandica. The most remarkable differences distinctly observed between the adult males of islandica and clangula were: 1) the crescentic white patch between the bill and the eye in islandica, which is round in clangula. 2) the scapulars and upper wing-coverts in islandica show more black than white (reverse in clangula). The white areas are confined to an irregular streak along the outer scapulars, a small patch on the median wing-coverts and the speculum, the latter consists of the tips of the greater coverts, as well as of most of the secondaries. 3) the black head has a purplish gloss in islandica, a greenish one in clangula. This is the first observation in the Netherlands of this species. There are, however, more records in other countries of Western Europe.
