Tomkovich P.S. & Serra L. (1999) Morphometrics and prediction of breeding origin in some Holarctic Waders. ARDEA 87 (2): 289-300
This is an extensive review, the first in the series ESSAYS ON RECENT PUBLICATIONS, of 'Geographical Variation in Waders' by M. Engelmoer and C.S. Roselaar, published in 1998. Some problems with the source materials underlying the analyses in the book, as well in the delineation of source groups are discussed, and some confusions are clarified. The application of a novel statistical technique called POSCON to assign birds to sex and geographical categories is assessed by testing with two empirical examples using field samples of Dunlins and Grey Plovers
