Bezemer K.W.L. (1958) De Middelste Bonte Specht, Dendrocopos medius (L.), in Delden. ARDEA 46 (1-2): 79-86
In 1957 the nests of three pairs of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius) were found in the Twickelforest at Delden (near Hengelo). The article is based on the observations of a small group of ornithologists, partly living in Delden, about these birds. After an introductory paragraph, a characteristic is given of medius, and a description of its notes, song and some of its habits. The last paragraph treats of the status of medius (which is very rare in Holland) in Delden. In all three cases the woodpeckers were driven out of their nesting holes by Starlings. These latter, by their number and persistence, are the greatest danger to medius.
