Haverschmidt F. (1958) Nesting notes on Amazilia fimbriata in Surinam. ARDEA 46 (3-4): 138-144

Records of 30 nests of Amazilia fimbriata (Fam. Trochilidae) in the author's garden near Paramaribo. Nests were found every month of the year. Nest-building took 6-12 days. The 2 eggs of the clutch were laid on alternate days and early in the morning. Incubation took 15-17 days, and the eggs hatched with one and in one case with even 2 days interval and only once on the same day. Hatching takes place in the morning as well as during the afternoon. The nestlings stay in the nest for 19-22 days and leave when they can fly well, never to return. Evidence is provided for second broods situated near the former nest site. Once a nest was repaired and used for a second brood. From the 30 nests 20 were successful, or 66%, from 30 nests (60 eggs) a total of 38 nestlings left the nest, or 63%, in the 20 successful nests 38 nestlings were reared, or 95% of the eggs laid.
